A changing dresser is a boon for new parents

When parents first bring a new baby back from the hospital to their home, there are many preparations that they are going to have to make. Unfortunately, these can often be expensive and parents are usually looking for ways to save money on these early expenses.

One of the best ways to save on costs would be to purchase a changing dresser. This is a piece of furniture that combines a dresser with a changing table and saves you having to buy the two items separately. This can offer a good saving but it is also a very convenient way of combining two bulky pieces of furniture. For those who have a particularly small home, this piece of furniture is very useful.

There are several different types of changing dresser available. One is more like a changing table that has drawers underneath it which can be used for storing various items. The other type is one that looks more like a dresser, underneath you will find many draws and on the top there is the changing table. This second variety will be a little bit more expensive, but the amount of extra storage space is probably worth the extra money.

The second type also has the advantage that it is going to be more useful for your child in the future. Once you no longer have a need for a changing table, this part of it can simply be detached and stored away. What your child will be left with is a useful dresser which they can use to store their clothes in. If you were to buy the first type of changing dresser then it is unlikely you would make much use of it after your baby has grown out of nappies.

Parents worry about child development

Parents are obsessed with how quickly or slowly their child is developing compared to others of the same age; some even become competitive, trying to outdo other parents at nursery with their toddler’s achievements. But most Mums and Dads are more interested in knowing that their child is developing normally, and that there are no clear indications of any problems with their physical health.

At two years old there are some very clear characteristics that all children share, and if your own youngster is displaying any of these then there is nothing to worry about – they are developing at a normal and healthy rate. Even though a two-year-old may have been walking for a few months, their back muscles are still under-developed. This is what leads to the typical erect posture that most toddlers have, complete with sticking-out tummy and an arched back.

Parents also worry that their child is developing properly mentally – something which is much more difficult to observe in toddlers. At the age of two a child’s brain will be about 80% of its final size; so parents shouldn’t expect their child to talk in complete sentences or have perfect motor skills.

There are a few things to look out for when it comes to walking and moving to make sure that your child’s development is heading in the right direction. Even so, remember that every child develops at their own pace, and just because your two-year-old can’t balance on one foot or climb the stairs one at a time doesn’t mean there is necessarily anything wrong.

This is usually the time when many families decide they are going to tackle toilet training, which can be a traumatic experience for both parents and children. Be patient and calm, and above all accept that your little one is going to have the odd accident from time to time.

If you are genuinely concerned about the speed at which your infant is developing new skills, you can always consult your doctor r check medical articles on the internet for more information. Most of the time there will be nothing to worry about, and your toddler will soon pick up the exact skills you were so concerned about.

Sensory pathways explained

Sensory pathways may well be new buzz words in education but it all reality we all have them and we have always used them, just some of us don’t actually know what they are.

The big idea of the moment is to stimulate the brain of a baby from as early an age as possible, and get friends, family and anyone else involved who is part of the child’s life.

The premise behind this is that we shouldn’t wait until a child goes to school for their education to begin. Sensory pathways are in fact learning pathways, and by providing a child with a whole range of sensory experiences their brains become able to absorb and retain information and the brain cells establish essential links with each other.

The unpleasant alternative is that if a child senses are not stimulated, these brain cells die due to them lacking the stimulus that they need to grow. When a child is ready to develop their sensory pathways in different areas a window of opportunity appears for the stimulation to take place, and these are easy to spot thankfully so these crucial times are not missed and thus the child suffers no negative impact.

The simple rule of thumb is that when a child has mastered something to an extent that they do it effortlessly and rather too easily, their brains are ready for a new challenge. This may sound complicated but it really isn’t. Positive development comes in stages with all of us, as in sight and motor skills etc, and these stages may come in quick succession or with gaps between them as, despite what some so called experts claim, all children are different and will develop at different rates.

Many parents panic about whether they are stimulating their baby enough, but simply by doing such ordinary things as hanging a mobile over their cot, or lying them on a brightly coloured blanket is stimulating their senses in so many ways. When they start to make

movements as if they are starting to crawl, put a favourite toy a little out of reach so they have to move to get them. This is a window of opportunity, and a sensory path is opening.

They say parenting is instinctive, and much of it is. If a baby is crying you do things to distract them, be it waving a toy or singing to them, this attracts their appropriate senses, as does giving them a toy that they can grip. Rocking a baby seems to be the most natural thing is the world, and many don’t realise that this simple, instinctive action actually helps the brain to grow by stimulating the vestibular system.

By regularly stimulating your baby’s vestibular system they will gain weight, develop vision and audio skills earlier and also develop good sleep patterns at a much younger age. It’ a fact that we only use around 4% of our brains, the more we stimulate our children’s brains through this early part of their lives the better. This sets them on the road of life in the most positive way.

The ability to speak clearly and succinctly is vital to progress in life, but hearing problems can seriously hinder this. It is vital that any hearing issues are diagnosed as early as possible so they can be addressed and any speech development problems minimised. Regular hearing tests are essential, and by making a noise a distance away from their ears should make them turn towards the sound.

Baby bags keep everything together that you need

Keeping a baby clean and tidy can be quite a challenge, especially if parents have taken the baby out for the day.

Babies are wonderfully sweet but in reality, at the end of the day, they are going to look rather messy.

One thing parents have a lot of experience in is that babies certainly learn how to eat food before they learn any manners. Parents are consistently surprised by how much mess a baby can make with just a small amount of food.

If you are going out for the day then it is a good idea to take all of the basic care products that you might need. If you have these, you are going to be able to tidy your baby up very quickly and you won’t have to worry about the problem anymore. For this reason, baby bags are very popular and there are numerous types available.

Baby changing bags are more sophisticated that they have been in the past. They have numerous built-in features which can speed up the process of changing your child when you are out and about. There are many holders and straps on these new bags for modern devices such as a mobile phone, so you will also find the bag convenient for your own uses.

One of the best features about modern changing bags is that they have a foldable changing mat. This can be great because the changing mats in public locations are never particularly comfortable. There are different sizes of bags with different sizes of changing mats so you are sure to be able to find something appropriate for your baby.

One of the best features is what is known as the quarantine area. This is a place where parents can put soiled items which is located away from the place you keep the clean ones. Modern bags will have antibacterial pockets to help keep everything hygienic. Insulated pockets are often present for keeping drinks at the right temperature.

Children’s books should be introduced as early as possible

Exposing children to books at an early age will inspire in them an interest in reading that can easily last their whole lives.

Not only will this thirst for books make their life at school much easier, but reading to your children regularly can improve their language skills. And it is never too early to start.

For young babies there are a range of cloth books and waterproof books suitable for bath-time play. Picture books, with bright illustrations and interactive features, will keep them amused for hours, and reading stories to them is also important- even if you know they don’t understand what you’re saying. Reading helps develop language skills as well as developing a bond between child and parent.

As your child grows older, take them along to their local library where they can discover the huge range of books that are available to them. As well as allowing them to choose a few books a week to take home many libraries hold special sessions for toddlers and youngsters, featuring book-related activities and story time – offering your child the chance to socialise with others their age, and giving you the opportunity to have a cup of tea and a chat with other parents.

Interactive books have come on in leaps and bounds since the days of mirrors and patches of furry material. Now many interactive books will actually read the story to your child itself – you can even buy personalised books online in which your son or daughter are the star and other friends and family members feature in the storyline.

Books are easy to carry around while you are on the move, taking up little space in bags or pushchairs and providing instant entertainment when your little one becomes bored in the shops or in the back of the car.

You will soon discover which books your own child adores, and if you are lucky there will be several in the same series. Encouraging your child to read will hopefully encourage them to love books and reading for many years to come.

Why buy a baby bouncer?

The question of what to buy for your baby that’ll genuinely be of use in terms of keeping them happy and entertained is an extremely tricky one. With so many products marketed as being essential for you and your baby, it’s almost impossible to get to grips with what you really do and don’t need. So, without confusing jargon or sales speak, if you buy one product to make your baby happier and your life that little bit easier, make it a baby bouncer. Here’s why:

  1. Nearly all baby bouncers have soft toys that dangle above them for the child to play with. This introduces them to playing from a young age, which is vital for their motor-neuron development.
  2. Not only will a baby bouncer keep your child quiet and entertained, but it’ll also give you the freedom to go about your daily tasks without worrying about your baby’s safety as they’ll be securely fastened into the bouncer.
  3. You can carry the bouncer easily around the house with you. They’re highly portable, so there’s no hassle associated with picking your little one up from their play-mat and moving their toys around every time you need to go into the kitchen.
  4. A baby bouncer can be used to feed your baby once they start eating solids. This is great if you don’t have a reclining high-chair since you’ll avoid the hassle of moving them around.
  5. The rocking, ‘bouncing’ motion is soothing for the child and can often help them get to sleep!

There’s a wide range of baby bouncers out there to suit your varying needs and requirements. The best way to choose a bouncer is to shop around thoroughly and consider what would be the best fit for your child.

Some bouncers provide more entertainment than others; for instance, some light up, some play music and some have a larger variety of toys. If you want something that’s stimulating for your child but not too gadget-heavy, there are also options available in light colours with only one or two soft toys.

Tips on how to stop your baby crying

Every new mother knows that helpless feeling of holding a crying baby in her arms and finding that nothing seems to be able to soothe her newborn infant.

Even though some babies are generally better than others when it comes to crying, every child will have episodes where they are inconsolable and parents can soon get to the end of their tether without a few techniques to calm even the most upset of babies.

If the child is normally quiet and not given to periods of unexplained crying, then the most logical reason is that they are in pain or feeling ill; and the most common source of discomfort in babies is colic or trapped wind. Every baby book tells you to get into the habit of winding children after they have been fed, but you must stick at it until they burp otherwise the wind is still trapped. A crying baby can be winded again to see if the trapped wind can be easily released.

Babies will cry for many reasons, but being woken in the night by that tell-tale sound is usually an indication that a nappy needs changing or a child needs to be fed. Some young ones will cry when they want physical attention, though this is more likely during the day when they are awake than at night.

Baby may have woken because they are too hot or cold – perhaps they have kicked off their blanket or maybe you had wrapped them up tight only for the temperature to rise overnight. The slightest change can be enough to disturb a newborn’s sleep – and consequently Mum and Dad’s.

No matter how well you plan ahead, the fact is that every newborn will wake up his or her parents at least twice a night in the first few weeks. Unlike when children get older and can often cry themselves back to sleep, a tactic like this will simply not work with a newborn who will only stop crying when the problem that woke them in the first place is resolved.

A baby’s stomach can only physically hold enough milk to sustain them for a couple of hours, but the last thing that Mum wants to do is to make these night-time feeding sessions fun for the little one or she will never get a full night’s sleep.

There is no need to be cruel – a few cuddles and kisses are fine – but keep the lights off, stay quiet and make it clear that these night time visits are functional, not fun; and baby will soon get the message that crying in the night does not get them the attention they crave.

As the weeks go by, you can start to introduce changes into the daily routine to try and encourage baby to sleep longer at night. Feeding your child more during the day should keep them going longer at night, while missing out an afternoon nap means they will be tired enough to sleep through the night – though be prepared for your little one to be very cranky the first couple of times you keep them awake during the afternoon.

Babies amazing ability to get dirty

One job that many new mothers probably don’t enjoy so much is feeding their babies. It can be a long and messy process and many different liquids and food can be spilled. Another important part of taking care of babies is making sure that their underwear and nappies are changed regularly enough.

If the baby remains wet for too long it is possible they could catch an infection or get a cold. This regular changing can be a great challenge for mothers as they often are not sure how often they should be changing their childs clothes.

Babies do have a certain ability to get dirty, whether from eating or play, therefore it is very important to change their clothing on a regular basis. It is also important to check their nappies and replace these even more regularly. Babies don’t just need to be cleaned when having their nappy changed however, and it is also important that every time they eat they are cleaned up as well.

Too much exposure of a baby to water can mean that they get a cold, so if you are feeding your baby then using a bib can be a great way to reduce some of the exposure. It is also essential when feeding a baby it gets used to the sensation of a spoon in its mouth.

At first, the baby will find the sensation unpleasant and can even fight against the spoon. Babies have to be fed and so they must get used to the sensation. At first, some mess is certainly going to be created as the baby tries to push away the food, but soon this will subside.

It is also important that a baby remains hygienic after a meal. Babies have a lot of fat around their neck and it is possible that food might get tucked into these folds of fat. It is  vital that after the baby has finished you check these areas for food and wipe them clean. If food or is left in there and it dries then a severe amount of discomfort can occur for the baby as well as emitting an unpleasant smell.

Furthermore, you also risk that the baby will catch a fungal or bacterial infection and even small insects might be attracted to the food. This can cause even greater discomfort as these insects might bite the baby, or at the very least they will cause a significant amount of itching.

In order to keep the neck area clean, as well as wiping it after meals, it is important that mothers change the clothing that the baby wears regularly. Food can often spill onto the clothes around the neck area and this can introduce food to the baby’s neck. A baby bib can be another way to keep the clothing around the baby’s neck clean so you don’t have to replace their clothing after each and every meal.

Help your baby, and yourself, to a good night’s sleep

Sleep is something that is essential to our survival, but until we don’t get enough it is not something we really think about. Not being able to get a good nights sleep is something that can be immensely frustrating and when this is happening to you one of the only things you could wish for is a night of uninterrupted rest.

Sleeping patterns are established when you are very young and so, when you are raising children, it is important to instil in them a healthy sleeping pattern. One of the major problems that children have when they are sleeping is the room being the right temperature. Seasonal conditions can mean that the rooms temperature varies throughout the year and this change in temperature can make sleep quite difficult.

A child’s cot should be made entirely from natural materials and they should be dressed in a material known as merino which is able to insulated child from temperature changes in the room. Synthetic fabrics that can be used in clothing as well as bedding can cause a child to experience temperatures that are uncomfortably warm. On the other hand, cotton doesn’t offer enough protection from cold temperatures.

It is also important to establish a night time routine that remains consistent with children. They generally require around nine hours of sleep every night, so make sure that their bedtime is appropriate for this. In order to make sure your child gets off to bed in time ensure that they eat an early dinner and have time for a shower or bath before bed. Encouraging children to wash before they go to bed signals to them that the day is over and it is time to sleep.

It is not just babies who need the right amount of sleep, and many new parents find that they will not be getting enough sleep as they are kept up by their baby. The good news for parents is that as a child gets older they are going to sleep for longer periods of time, but until this happens you’re going to have to deal with an erratic sleep schedule.

It is possible to associate certain activities with bedtime, such as the bathing mentioned above, and this can promote longer and uninterrupted periods of sleep to your baby. As mentioned earlier, children need to sleep around nine hours every night and many of them will also nap during the day in addition to this nine hours.

It is important that your child’s room is set up for enjoying long periods of sleep, and this can involve buying a high quality mattress and getting high quality bedding. Getting a good night’s sleep is something that is important to both children and the adults raising them.

By promoting healthy sleeping patterns in your children you yourself will be able to enjoy more nights of uninterrupted sleep. The various tips mentioned above should help in establishing a good sleeping routine in your children.

Teething needn’t be a problem

Teething is an experience that all babies have go through at some point and for some it can be harder than others. Many parents want to look for a way to relieve the pain without resorting to medication. There is plenty of information about different methods of treatment on the internet and some will work for your child while others will not. As long as they are safe then it will do little harm to just give it a go and see if it works.

As adults we know that cold numbs pain and the same will work for children. Try feeding them food that has been in the fridge for a long time such as yoghurt as this can help numb the pain that they are feeling. Another good way to introduce coldness to a baby’s mouth is to put a wet flannel in the fridge and then allow them to chew on it once it has become nice and cold. Many people also report that the rough texture of the flannel can help relieve the pain.

If the teething pain has come on rather suddenly and you don’t have time to chill something down then crush up some ice and put it in a cotton cloth. You will not be able to give this to your baby but you can rub it over their gums yourself and it will help numb them. Never use ice without a cotton cloth as when it comes into contact with the gums it can cause damage to your baby’s mouth.

When babies are teething they tend to dribble a lot and this can cause them to become dehydrated. You might often find that one of the reasons they are suffering is not simply because of the pain but because of this lack of fluids. Therefore make sure that your baby is drinking plenty of fluids; try water or heavily diluted juice.

Lightly rubbing your baby’s gums with a clean finger can relieve some of the pain. You will easily be up to find the area which is sore because it would generally be hotter than the rest of the mouth and you might even get to feel a small tooth coming in underneath. It is also possible to rub the gums with a small piece of gauze padding. This will bring a certain amount of relief and will also accustom your baby to the sensation of having their teeth brushed.

If the baby is older than four months then it is alright to use a teething gel. This is a substance that can be applied to the gums of babies and it will help numb some of the pain associated with teething.

Another popular method of relieving teething pain is distraction. Give your baby something to play with whenever their teething pains become really bad, and this will divert their attention away from the pain. There are even specific toys available that are designed for teething children; they are made to be rubbed against the gums but will also entertain children.

Make sure that if you are buying these toys that they are specifically designed for this purpose so that they are healthy for children to chew on and not toxic. If none of these methods help then it may be a wise idea to consider switching to medication.
